VETERANS
In a district with thousands of active duty and retired military members, I am a veteran-friendly
legislator. Fort Carson is in my district and I attend all the ceremonies that I can to show support
for our troops and their families.

WHAT I'VE DONE FOR VETERANS

* Sponsored Resolution in the House which honored the military personnel from
Colorado who are serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring  Freedom
and honoring those who have died while serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

* Co-sponsored HB-1352 and added the amendment to it for the "Special Forces" license plates.
The bill expands the list of family members of fallen U.S. military personnel who are
eligible to apply for a fallen service member (FSM) special license plate, and
permanently exempts one set of FSM special plates per applicant from the $25 fee for
military special license plates. The bill:

* Co-sponsored HB-1105:The bill modifies the eligibility dates of service that allow a person to
be issued a veteran of  the Korean War special license plate. Current law requires a
person to have been a member of the  U.S. armed forces between June 25, 1950, to July
27, 1953. The bill changes it from June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955.

* Co-sponsored HB-1149: The bill makes several changes to laws governing voting by citizens
living overseas. Among other things, the bill requires that the Secretary of State
cooperate with military voting assistance officers to assist with voter registration and
absentee ballot applications.

* Co-sponsored HB-1163: In-state tuitions military for persons in the military. A member of the
armed forces or a dependent of the member eligible for instate tuition at a state
institution of higher education if the member is transferred to Colorado on a temporary
duty assignment. All members of the Colorado National Guard and their dependents are
eligible for in-state tuition.

* Co-sponsored HB-1211: This bill was recommended by the Legislative Oversight Committee
on State and Veterans Nursing Homes. The bill creates a seven-member Board of
Commissioners of State and Veterans Nursing Homes within the Department of Human
Services to advise the Division of State and Veterans Nursing Homes within the
department and specified state and veterans nursing homes located in Homelake,
Florence, Trinidad, Walsenburg, Rifle, and Aurora, Colorado.

* Co-Sponsored HB-1212: The bill requires the State Board of Human Services, with input from
the Division of State and Veterans Nursing Homes within the Department of Human
Services, to promulgate rules to establish a system for the creation and operation of
local advisory boards at each of the state and veterans nursing homes located in
Homelake, Florence, Trinidad, Rifle, Aurora, and Walsenburg, Colorado.

* Co-sponsored HB-1232: Allows any school district to apply to the Department of Education for
military dependent supplemental pupil enrollment aid for the cost of education pupils who are enrolled
in the district as of Februrary first of the applicable budget year.

* Co-sponsored HB-1251: Referendum E which was approved by the registered electors of the
state at the 2006 General  Election allows the senior homestead exemption to be
extended to veterans who are 100 percent  permanently disabled due to a
service-connected disability. This reengrossed bill administers the property tax
exemption for qualifying disabled veterans that was created by that action. It is
estimated that 2,237 disabled veterans will qualify for the property tax exemption in
Referendum E. For property tax years beginning January 1, 2007, the exemption would
apply to half of the first  $200,000 in market value for a home owned and occupied by a
qualifying disabled veteran.

based soley on membership in the uniformed services of the United States.
